COVID-19 Pandemic Could Take a Toll on Our Pets

Humans aren't the only ones feeling the stress from the coronavirus pandemic.

Veterinarian Dr. Chad Dodd said in a British news report, "Pets pick up subliminal messages and they are going to pick up on anxiety and stress," Dodd said. "Anytime when there are changes in our daily routine, it’s going to disrupt our pets."

While bonding time has certainly been increased with most pet owners staying home more with the shutdowns, Dr. Dodd cautioned pet owners to not overlook their pets while working from home.

Dodd explained, "Pets are going to be adjusting to the ‘new normal’ too."

There's a tendency to also overfeed pets as owners spend more time with them, with treats and food-reward games. Dodd cautions pet owners to be wary of how much they are feeding their pets at this time.

On a more positive note, though, "Studies show that pets can lower blood pressure in their owners," Dodd said. "Pets can be great comforters - they can actually improve their owners' health and decrease their stress levels. We definitely encourage people, if they are healthy, to cuddle their pets."

Today, the number of global coronavirus cases reached over 1 million infected, and the US is the most impacted country on the planet.

Stay home and cuddle with your dog—it's good for everyone.
